What exactly is a cake smash session? It’s actually an event that takes place when the child is one year old. They receive cakes to eat or smash, or none if we’re sincere. Cake smashing sessions are an enjoyable opportunity to mark the occasion of your child turning 1. Baby’s at one are filled with wonder and curiosity. The majority of things they come across in their daily lives are completely new to them. There are new toys to play with or new food items to try as well as new surroundings to explore and new people to meet. This activity is a wonderful opportunity to capture that excitement and the excitement associated with it. Cakes are typically the first thing babies see at this stage, which can be the perfect setup to capture that excitement, curiosity and joy (or the fear of).
As with all of my sessions, there is the option of having the cake smash outdoors or inside with a theme backdrop (more on this later). The session will be led by children. This means that we’ll move according to your child’s needs. The cake smash session is about capturing the personality of your child as well as letting the child experience this through play. With an idea of what a”cake smash” session really is, let’s take an look at what a cake smashing session looks like with me specifically.
What’s the cake that is included during a smashing party?
Theme-planning

My studio is fully stocked with props I’ll utilize to help make your idea come to reality. If you have specific props you would like to bring along, do so! I’ll get the backdrop ready upon arrival and will make any necessary adjustments using any other accessories or props you bring.
It can be difficult to determine what your child should wear to the cake smashing party isn’t easy. My wardrobe for studio use is available to you. Whatever outfit I have, is yours to choose for your child’s photo session. I usually suggest that when we meet for our first session of consultation, parents go through my studio’s clothing. So they can gain an understanding of what they have to choose from and decide beforehand if they would like to purchase or make use of their own outfit or choose one from my closet. Since it is a cake smashing event and often dirty, some moms go for a diaper-only look or the diaper and accessories.
Cake
I will bake the cake for your child’s cake smash. There is a baker I utilize for all my sessions. I will provide fresh cakes for each session. In the initial consultation call I mentioned earlier, we’ll discuss whether your child suffers from any particular allergies. This way, we can be sure that your child is in good hands during the time!
Bubble bath
After the cake smash part of the event is over, your child could end up being an accident. For cleanup assistance the next phase of the event will involve taking a bath. I have a tub we can take your child to clean them up and take some great pictures of their personalities while they take their bath. You can create an easy bubble bath, or we can add flowers or fruits to make it more unique.
What are the best tips for an event with a cake?
Schedule your cake smash session keeping naps in mind
Bedtime or nap time is a must when planning an event for a cake smash. The goal of these sessions is to showcase the personality of your child, so we must ensure that they’re refreshed. If your child follows schedule and sleeps every throughout the day at a particular time I’ll try to follow that schedule. If your child’s not in a routine but is likely to be most joyful at certain times during the day ensure that we plan the session for the time that they are most happy.
Let them be hungry
I would always suggest that the child eats prior to when you go to a session to ensure that they’re not hungry and irritable, but during cake smash sessions, it is beneficial in the event that your child is hungry. Of course, they should still eat but if they’re still hungry before they arrive at the shooting, they may be more inclined to dig in the cakes. If they’ve eaten the entire food and aren’t less eager to eat when they look at the cake.
Bring their most loved snack
If you’re worried that your child might be shy about digging in the cakes, make sure you have your child’s most loved snack in the pantry. Puffs, cheerios, yogurt bites, crackers, etc. Whatever ” always satisfied” snacks, they can bring it along. You can place those tiny snacks inside the icing or a part of the cake to get the guests to really eat the cake.
